King Chavez Preparatory Academy Solar Installation

Solar Installation King Chavez Prep Academy
King-Chavez Preparatory Academy stands as a beacon of academic excellence and community empowerment in downtown San Diego. As a charter school dedicated to urban education, its mission is as noble as it is vital: to bridge the education gap between low-income and high-income families by providing underserved children with the resources and opportunities they need to thrive. From its robust Dual Language Program to its “foundation of love” approach to student support, the academy is a transformative force for its neighborhood. However, like many educational institutions operating in the heart of the city, the academy faced a persistent obstacle: escalating utility costs that threatened to siphon funds away from the classroom.

Recognizing that every dollar spent on high electricity bills—driven largely by the intense air conditioning needs of a downtown campus—was a dollar taken away from student potential, the leadership at King-Chavez Prep Academy turned to solar. They were among the first charter schools in the San Diego area to recognize the transformative power of renewable energy, and Stellar Solar was honored to be selected to help them achieve their vision of energy independence.

Innovative Design for Urban Infrastructure

The installation at King-Chavez Prep Academy required a specialized engineering approach suited for a flat-roof urban building. Our team designed and installed a 33-panel system with a total capacity of 34.68 kW. Because the integrity of the school’s roof was a top priority, we utilized a sophisticated ballast mounting system.

Unlike traditional solar mounts, a ballast system does not require any roof penetrations. Instead, it utilizes the precise weight of concrete blocks to secure the solar array in place, ensuring the system is rock-solid and wind-resistant without risking leaks or structural issues. This non-invasive design allowed us to maximize the school’s roof space for energy production while protecting the underlying infrastructure.

Financial Stewardship for the Next Generation

The impact of this solar transition was immediate and profound. By generating its own clean energy on-site, King-Chavez Prep Academy was able to drastically reduce—and at times completely eliminate—a power bill that was previously a major monthly liability. In the high-stakes environment of urban education, this shift represents a powerful act of financial stewardship.

By zeroing out these utility expenses, the academy has successfully redirected its financial resources toward its most important asset: the students. The funds that used to go toward paying for electricity are now being reinvested into essential educational tools, including:

  • Modern Technology: Purchasing new computers and digital resources to ensure students are prepared for a 21st-century workforce.
  • Educational Supplies: Providing high-quality classroom materials and enrichment resources.
  • Enhanced Support: Funding the programs and personnel that make King-Chavez a “Community School” model for the entire city.
